Is there a burning smell? Can you smell smoke, is the socket sparking, or has a connector melted? Switch off the utility circuit breaker beneath the meter, do not use the affected circuit any further, and call by telephone. If a fire develops, immediately dial the 112 emergency number.

General fault finding

Has the circuit breaker tripped? Is it humming? Is there no power in one room, is a light flickering, or is a socket heating up? The fault may be caused by a short circuit or a loose connection. A wire connection made merely by twisting conductors together, without a suitable connector, cannot be regarded as a compliant and durable connection, so a significant proportion of problems can be traced back to this cause.

Consumer unit replacement

Screw-in fuse holders or a crowded, confusing old FKA board? Let us replace it with a modern consumer unit. New miniature circuit breakers and, where required and feasible, an RCD, surge protection device and balanced phase loading.

Adding a circuit

Is the washing machine running from an extension lead? Are there too few kitchen sockets? Has a new high-consumption appliance arrived in the household? Is a power strip plugged into another power strip? A significant proportion of residential fires can be traced back to an electrical fault, overload or lack of maintenance (Source: Disaster Management). Do not expose your home to a fire risk. A new circuit can be installed from the consumer unit to the desired connection point either in a chased channel or in cable trunking.

Installing an RCD

The circuit breaker protects the cable, while the residual-current device protects you and your loved ones. In the general final circuits of residential properties, a type A RCD with a rated residual operating current of no more than 30 mA is generally required, taking into account the requirements of the circuit and connected equipment. After installation, the owner always receives a test report confirming correct operation.

Connecting household appliances

Induction hob, built-in oven, dishwasher, tumble dryer or air conditioner. These require conductors with the correct cross-section and, in many cases, a dedicated circuit. If they can be connected at an existing connection point, there is no obstacle to commissioning. The connection is completed, the document is stamped, I say goodbye, and you can enjoy every benefit of your new appliance. If commissioning reveals that a material prerequisite is not met and commissioning is therefore blocked, I also offer my customers the best possible solutions for that situation.

Installing electrical accessories

Replacement of switches, sockets, frames, data and TV outlets, and modernisation of old accessories. Before painting, I remove them so the painter can work freely. Naturally, the painter is not left without lighting and electricity; there are established construction-industry methods for providing these. After the work I reinstall the accessories, so no smeared frames or taped-over switches remain on the freshly painted wall.

Installing light fittings

Installation and connection of chandeliers, ceiling LED lights, mirror lighting and outdoor motion-sensor lights. In bathrooms, installation of luminaires with an IP rating appropriate to the zones. Cabinet lighting, power supplies for LED strips and dimming. I also help select brightness, colour temperature and colour rendering so that, while sitting on the sofa at home, you do not feel as if you have just taken a seat in the local dentist’s chair. Properly lit spaces contribute to the comfort of our home.

Water-heater maintenance and descaling

Is our water heater slow to heat, or is there no hot water at all? Limescale build-up appears first on the heating element and then on the electricity bill. Does the bath water give an electric shock? Does showering cause a tingling sensation? In most cases, the heating element has burnt through. If the water heater operates under the supervision of an RCD, this may cause it to trip. There may be a problem with the thermostat or controls, but a thorough inspection can identify the cause, for which we will find the best possible solution with an appropriate price-to-value ratio.

Property electrical assessment

Would you like to buy a flat or house and do not know the condition of its electrical system? Properties are often advertised for sale with a fully renovated electrical system even though the system is not renovated at all and is actually life-threatening. Unfortunately, this is no exaggeration!! You receive a written opinion and an estimated renovation cost before the sale. This is not the same as the electrical safety inspection required during a property sale. Naturally, I can also perform the full electrical safety inspection if requested.
