Do you have your own parking space or garage? With a wall charger you can charge your electric car at home overnight far more cheaply than at a public charging station. You can always set off in the morning with a full battery. I install the dedicated circuit for the charger from the meter position or the consumer unit, with the residual current protection required for it and, where necessary, with load management.
Why is a socket not enough?
A domestic socket outlet is not designed for continuous load lasting for hours. Yet that is exactly what the car does to it. It loads it and heats it. A wall charger works on its own, exclusively dedicated circuit, communicates with the car and charges at an adjustable current. This is not a question of convenience: a socket under sustained load, undersized or with loose connections, is the most common source of fire.
What the installation includes
- A survey of the existing supply and the meter position: how many phases there are, how much power is available, whether it can take the charger without an upgrade
- A separate circuit from the meter position or consumer unit to the charger, with appropriate protection
- The residual current protection required for the charger: a type "A" RCD with 6 mA DC fault current detection, or failing that a type "B" RCD.
- Static or dynamic load management on request, so that charging adapts to the remaining available power
- Surge protection, if the consumer unit does not already have it
- Commissioning, measurement, a test certificate and handover of the settings
What size of charger makes sense?
With a single-phase supply you can typically go up to 7.4 kW; with three phases, 11 kW is the usual choice for homes, while 22 kW is more of a corporate or fleet requirement. 11 kW will comfortably charge an average battery overnight, and a larger charger does not in itself charge any faster if the car's on-board charger accepts less. During the survey I will tell you what genuinely makes sense and what the client would simply be paying for unnecessarily.

Here, alongside the technical solution, paperwork is needed as well. Owner or condominium consent, a cleared cable route, and billing of the consumption either from your own meter or through a sub-meter. We go through all of this in advance so that unpleasant surprises for everyone concerned do not emerge on the day of installation.
